Laparoscopic myomectomy (with in bag morcellation)
Laparoscopic myomectomy is removal of a fibroid via keyhole surgery. Dr Wetherell is very passionate about this surgical approach and this is her favourite surgical technique. She has extensive experience in this advanced laparoscopic procedure. Her favourite part of the surgical experience is the major impact that it can have on improving a woman’s symptoms of heavy bleeding or pressure, and the relatively short recovery time, minimal pain, and excellent cosmesis that is characteristic of laparoscopic surgery. This means that her patients can get back to their normal busy lives quicker.
Dr Wetherell likes to divide this surgery into three main components:
- Removal of the fibroid
- This is done rapidly to minimise bleeding. Time is of the essence at this point.
- Every technique available to reduce bleeding is utilised including:
- IV tranexamic acid and misoprostol
- Vasopressin injection
- Rapid and efficient operating to remove the fibroid
- Laparoscopic suturing of the uterus
- This is also done rapidly and efficiently. Dr Wetherell does this in layers – usually three layers to ensure there is no bleeding, and also to make the muscle strong.
- Morcellation of the fibroid in a bag
- Dr Wetherell uses the Espiner bag and a power morcellator.
- All morcellation is done under vision and inside the bag to minimise any spill of fibroid contents.
