In bag morcellation
Dr Wetherell is a minimally invasive surgeon and can perform laparoscopic “key-hole” hysterectomy for a larger uterus. In these cases the largest incision in the abdomen is 1.5cm hidden in the belly button using a process called “in bag morcellation” to remove the uterus or fibroid. Maintaining small incisions and completing everything key-hole minimally invasively results in better outcomes for the patients – including reduced pain, shorter hospital stay, quicker recovery, and improved cosmesis.
Dr Wetherell is a minimally invasive surgeon and can perform laparoscopic hysterectomy for a larger uterus and uses a process called “in bag morcellation” to remove the uterus or fibroid. Usually, after a laparoscopic hysterectomy the uterus is removed from the vagina, and the top of the vagina is sutured at the end. However, sometimes the uterus is too large to come out of the vagina. In this case, Dr Wetherell puts the uterus into a Espiner bag and morcellates it, removes the uterus in small pieces, under vision using a power morcellator. This is a complex procedure and only an advanced laparoscopic surgeon is accredited to do such a procedure. Dr Wetherell is skilled in this procedure and has a special interest in this method of tissue extraction, and this is her preferred method of removing large uteri or fibroids from small incisions.
