Contraception
Dr Wetherell provides medical and surgical options for contraception.
Mirena IUCD
Medical
Hormonal options:
- Combined oral contraceptive pill (COCP)
- Progesterone only pill (POP)
- Mirena or Kyleena Intrauterine Contraceptive Device (IUCD) – can be inserted in the rooms or under anaesthesia
Non hormonal options:
- Copper IUCD
Surgical
- Bilateral salpingectomy – this has replaced a procedure known as “clipping the tubes” or “tying the tubes”. The current recommendation is now to just remove the tubes via keyhole surgery as this is 100% effective against pregnancy, and also it is thought to reduce the risk of ovarian cancer, as most ovarian cancers originate from the fallopian tubes.
